Erasmus Knowledge Centre for Film, Heritage and Tourism

Join us on Thursday May 30, 2024, for a 2-hour symposium in celebration of the launch of our new knowledge centre and edited volume focused on media tourism worldwide! With introductions by Stijn Reijnders (EUR), Saskia Kagchèl (Rotterdam Film Commission) and Marjorie Galas (AFCI) and keynotes from prof. Jane Lovell (Canterbury Christ Church University) and prof. David Martin Jones (University of Glasgow).

As the outcome of a ERC Proof of Concept grant, Stijn Reijnders and Emiel Martens recently founded the Erasmus Knowledge Centre for Film, Heritage, and Tourism (FIHETO). Operating from the EUR, FIHETO is a non-profit organization dedicated to knowledge exchange, strategic advice and capacity building on sustainable and inclusive film production and related tourism worldwide. One of the first efforts of the centre was to put together an edited volume on the topic, which was published by Routledge in April 2024. The book Media, Place and Tourism: Worlds of Imagination highlights the connections between media, tourism and place, bringing together the diverse perspectives, approaches and actors involved in critical issues relating to media tourism worldwide.

In celebration of the launch of both the knowledge centre and edited volume, we are organizing this 2-hours symposium on media tourism. We kick off with introductions by Stijn Reijnders, professor of cultural heritage and co-founder of FIHETO, and Saskia Kagchèl, the Rotterdam Film Commissioner and board member of FIHETO, and Marjorie Galas, Director of Members & Education at the Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI). Then, we have two keynotes by internationally renowned professors focusing on matters related to media tourism. Jane Lovell (Canterbury Christ Church University) will talk about magic and heritage in relation to media tourism, while David Martin-Jones (University of Glasgow) will explore the representation of tourism in Bollywood films. Following their keynotes, we will officially present the new knowledge platform FIHETO and new edited volume Media, Place and Tourism.

The symposium will be held on Thursday May 30 from 14.00-16.00 hrs in Polak 2-18 at the EUR campus. Following the symposium, there will be a networking reception from 16:00-17:00 hrs at Paviljoen.
